According to the Local Ordinary of the diocese, Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, the project was started in 2019 but was unfortunately interrupted by Coronavirus pandemic throughout last year.

As he toured the site, Bishop Hiiboro is optimistic that the development will help change the situation within the diocese and beyond by ensuring that maternal deaths during child birth are reduced to zero.

“Just two days ago a mother died here in Tombura during labor; fortunately, the baby was rescued, and we pray that this baby will survive. I found myself crying when I saw the story of this lady because he died as a result of lack of medical facility to handle complications that often arise during child birth,” Bishop Hiiboro explained.

“I’m therefore very happy to see that the construction of our hospital which will be a maternity clinic for women and children is on progress. I’m so grateful that work has started and it is on full swing,” Bishop Hiiboro expressed adding that once completed, it is going to be the second biggest hospital in the diocese.

He explained that it is going to be a special clinic that will pay attention to the care of mothers and child before, during and post birth.

“The work is going on well and when completed the facility will have all the necessary parts, the theater, the delivery room and the wards which we intend to equip with necessary equipment to take care of the needs of women and children especially at critical moments of birth.”

Bishop Hiiboro informed Rurugene Online News according to the engineer on site, they will be able to put up the roofing in February and do the rest of the finishing in the month of March and April.

“I am so grateful to our collaborators and donors who have enabled all this to take place. We laid the foundation stone in 2019, unfortunately we were interrupted by Coronavirus pandemic and we thank God that now the work is progressing.”

The Bishop therefore called upon parishes in Tombura, St. Francis of Assisi, St. John the Evangelist and Mary Help of Christians together with all the Christian communities and people of Tombura to mobilize whatever they can to support the construction.

“As we already agreed that you will be able to support and care for this hospital, I encourage and ask the committee and the board that has been set for this hospital to mobilize your energy and efforts to support this project. It is through our collective contributions that we will be able to achieve this dream that is currently manifesting before us,” Bishop Hiiboro appealed adding that he is very happy and hopeful that the diocese will be able to turn the lives of her people around.

“My prayer and hope is that with the establishment of this hospital, no woman, no child would be subjected to suffering and death due to lack of medical attention. Only what God permits will happen but not because there are no proper health services for women and children. This is my joy as I continue to pray for the successful completion of the project.”
